Martha - You have to listen to the Doctors and staff and TRUST their experience. We learned this watching what Uncle Tom has been through. They’ve seen so much - they know what is normal and what is good. When you falter - hold onto their words. Trust me! Everything you, Scott, Marcus, Kim, and all your other family have been through so much - it’s so very encouraging to hear how things are going! Lots of love!
Carol Krueger (co-work and friend of Scott's) said,
Thank you for the address. See what you can do with Marcus’s address too.
Tell Scott that all his friends and co-worker’s here at GSFC are with him. We pray everyday for his return to work. His smile means a lot. Glad to hear that Marcus is getting to go home and that Scott is coming along beautifully. Scott needs a little more time to get back then Marcus did. Remember for four years Scott suffered thru a lot. His body is tired and needs to rest. All the news that you have shared with us is good news. Being of the nursing profession myself and not even being around to see what he looks like or read a chart, sounds like he has come a long way since last week when he was operate on. Tell Scott we love him and keep us posted everyday when you can.
Dear Martha
I Haven’t got a lot to say except, keep p your courage girl. I think its especialy hard when things are going so well to take the setbacks. I presume Scott’s throat soreness is due to the breathing tube. My surgery only lasted 31/2 hours but several days after the surgery my throat was quite sore so I hope Scott’s much longer surgery is just taking its time to heal up. This web site is a great help and I look at it every day. I know its been terribly hard on you and the girls, not to mention Scott. You are all in our thoughts and prayers
Katie and John and Jenny
I’m so glad to be able to read this to keep updated. I’m thinking of you guys everyday, and I wish for you strength and patience and more of the fabulous good luck and fantastic healing which is allowing the two guys to wreck the curve. I look forward to the day when I can witness the big smiles produced by having a healthy Scott around. I love you all.
Congratulations to everyone, especially for your courage! I have been following events on the website, Great job Martha. Your Scott quote from Sunday has us referring to “Scott D”! That really hit home. Scott has a way with the (my!) language. Its amazing to me that Marcus has already been released. I have never met him but he has my admiration. I wish him a smooth recovery. Scott, your almost matter-of-fact approach to all of this continuously kept me amazed. I am so relieved that you have come through this adventure ~98% complete. I look forward to doing lunch again soon. Thanks Martha for keeping us all so well informed. Its more than that, thanks so much for sharing the experience with me. Our thoughts are with all of you. May the medical miracles keep on coming!
We’ve been keeping up with your progress. Everyone is really excited about how well you’re doing. Your courage, and that of your family, is incredible.
I ended up talking to an acquaintance of yours at NASA HQ yesterday — John Lyver. He asked about you, and was really happy to hear you’re doing so well. He asked me to pass on his regards and best wishes.
Keep doing well, but watch out for that hospital food.
Scott & Martha, Sorry for the (inevitable, it seems) setbacks. Even knowing that this is normal, or at least not unusual to have, doesn’t quell the frustration.
Scott, hang in there. I know its tuff when you don’t feel good and “THEY JUST DON”T GET IT/HELP/UNDERSTAND/…!” Maybe you can get Erin or Shannon to sneak you in a bell to keep with you…clang-clang…CLANG!CLANG!
Keep faith in your team. You’ve come a long ways to get here…its still a long bumpy path ahead…but you can make it. Remember you’ve got a lot of people rooting for you and your FANTASTIC wife and daughters and family/friends there to back you up. Just keep that No. 2 Ticonderoga and Big Chief tablet handy since you probly shouldn’t scream yet.
Martha - again thanks. And please take care of yourself. I tell you, get Erin in to glare at those docs if you think they need intimidating.
Remember you’ve got lots of hands/shoulders/ears available if you need them.
Marcus - So glad to hear you’re doing okay. Work it but don’t over do it (too much).
Riley and I walk by your house every morning and think of you. So glad for this site to get updates. All I know is that everytime I would see you and ask how you were feeling….you ALWAYS answered with something amazingly positive and always with a smile.
Please know that all your neighbors are thinking of you and hoping for your steady recovery.
Laurie, Ron, Ryan, Molly and (of course) Riley.
News sounds good today. Much better then yesterday. Things will improve everyday believe me. I know just how he feels about modesty. After being and working in a hospital now for 43 yrs, you get to the point you don’t care who is looking because you hurt, your uncomfortable and you want the hell out of that hospital. But Scott at least a fig leaf. Never know when someone might walk in unexpected.
Scott remember I was doing the Goddard Scientific Colloquium at least for the pass 19 yrs. Well they took that job away from me and I am working now in Code 671 Laboratory for Solar Physics, Bldg 21. Anyway I am being taken out today at lunch for my Birthday by some of the guys and gals from the Colloquium. Looking forward to that. I promise when you come back we will go out to lunch and celebrate your and mine together. Maybe Michael will come too.
Okay, it’s rest time for you. I will read more tomorrow. Martha thank you so much for keeping us updated. You are wonderful.
I hope thing get better for you Marcus wants you to tell Scott to hang in there it will all be worth it We are here for you guys if you need anything!!!! I mean anything Let me know if there is anything you need me to bring down on Friday Marcus said that he is going to bring Scott some Vanilla Pudding down for him so tell him he can look forward to that. With Marcus as a ranger it is hard for him to leave with Scott still in the hospital because you go in as a team and come out as a team. It was very hard for Marcus to leave his teamate behind Hang in there Scott we are behind you 100% We love you
Kim & Marcus
Our family and the boy’s school are praying for “yunze” from Pittsburgh. There is a request that you to post pictures of Scott’s verus the Ranger liver. Keep up the courage and be patient with the recovery. Give a hug to Scott and the girls for me. Mary, Gerry, Richard, Joey, Robert
I got the liver pictures today, but they are slightly bigger than this site will accept. If anyone wants to help me try to figure out a way to post them….
signed, “Spare-parts” (Mary is my identical twin sister - you figure out why she calls me that…
Thank you for creating this site! It has kept me a little at peace being 550 miles away. We’ve all kept you guys in our thoughts and prayers daily, sharing information through e-mails and phone calls throughout the whole family.
Please share hugs and love with each other for us and hopefully we’ll see you soon.
Scott, Keep the Hull peace, prayers and positive mind! I can hear Baba and PopPop calming us now.
Westminster UM Church (Steve and Ann’s congregation) has been praying throughout the journey for Scott and Marcus. Today Steve told me about the blog. Scott, stay strong and wait for the Lord.
Big Gulp, If you are up to it at Samhain I’d like to jump the New Years fire with you, I don’t think one needs sparkley vocal cords for that, be sure to jump high tho, fire smarts when it gets you in the butt! I will be yelling “Happy new year-HAPPY NEW LIVER” regardless of where I am!
xoxoxoxoxo Katsika {little goat; Mary P.; Dark Mary; Hey You; or Good Old Whats-Her-Name!}
Hey Marcus…….THANKS!!!!! If I ever get to meet you I’d like to buy you a beer, ummm maybe a lemonade, water? water is always good. You can pick, that would probably be the best.
For everyone who is posting on this site - can we work a bit a bit harder at making the lads laugh?
Sorry, forgot something - if you still have that Big Chief tablet, paper airplanes will get the nurses attention. Lots and lots of paper airplanes. I will mail you a rubber band so you could shoot the #2 Ticonderoga when you REALLY want their attention!
Scottie,
I promise you that when you are ready I will bake you a cake and bring it to you. Just forgot what your favorite was.
Glad you can have some visitors. Enjoy them. I will wait just a little longer before I poke my head in the door. I hope you have that fig leave ready though. Next step you will be going down the hall. Martha keep watch on him I heard there are a lot of pretty nurses in that Hospital. Love you man and keep up the good work you are needed at the next staff meeting.
Martha,
Thaht is great news about Scott I hope all goes well. You have to let us know when he will be comming home and we wll try our hardest to get do there to see him WALK out and I know that it would be great for Marcus to know that they went in together and they came out together so to speak I am so excited for you guys if there is ANYTHING you need when you get home let me know when you are up for visitor’s we will come down with dinner The hole week after Marcus got home we had dinner brought to us by everyone and it was so nice because it as one less thing to worry about so you let me know and we will bring dinner to you Take care and hope to here good things soon
We love you guys.
Kim & Marcus
Glad to hear that you are doing well and on the way to recovery. Sam and other colleagus asked about your progress the other day. We all send you our regards and warm wishes. Hope to see you soon.
Hang in there. Your family is amazing … thier strength, support, and most of all thier love is incredible! Also, it seems the BBC has become a part of the family as well. You are one lucky man … most people only have one guardian angel … you have a whole network.
Great news! But you’re right that the work and worry won’t end with coming home. At least Scott’s rest won’t be interrupted by tests and procedures at home (just cats and kids). We can bring dinner up on a weekend, too. Let us know if the patient has any dietary restrictions. And if the girls want to play with us in Alexandria, we’d love to have them.
Okay Scott, I guess we shouldn’t have played that round of purple-glove volleyball, huh?
Keep your spirits up. This is just another challenge/puzzle/problem to be “solved”. As frustrating (and cliched) as it is, just take it a day at a time. That ‘problem’ today might look like just the right thing down the road.
Deirdre & I really enjoyed seeing you Saturday. We’ll get that “visit” in another time.
My prayers continue for you and your family. Keep the spirits up and faith strong. The folks here at GSFC are behind you 100%. Martha, you are a soldier and thanks for keeping us informed of the progress. I check everyday. GOD bless.
Keep up the good work at recovering quickly. Laughter is good medicine. Here is a joke for you: How many Irishmen does it take to change a lightbulb? 13. One to hold the lightbulb and 12 to drink enough until the room starts spinning.
You probably hate everybody doing everygthing for you, but make sure you thank Martha for all she does/did.
OK - In the interest of humor totally unrelated to the situation at hand … from my daily calendar “Wild Words from Wild Women” …
“I adopted a baby. I wanted a highway, but it was a lot of red tape.” - Margaret Smith, humor headliner
“Here I am. … You get the parts of me you like and also the parts that make you uncomfortable. You have to understand that other people’s comfort is no longer my job. I am no longer a flight attendnat.” - Patricia Ireland, stewardess and feminist leader
Now, back to your regularly scheduled program …
Carol Krueger (co-work and friend of Scott's) said,
Things have really improved since I wrote last. Nothing has changed here at GSFC. We still miss you. Right now I am dealing with a husband who’s left lung colasped. He has left lung pneumonia along with emphysema 2nd stage, and spots on lungs. His breathing is bad right now and I had him taken to the hospital on Sunday where he is now. Along with the other 50 million major health problems. Doctor told me that things done look to good over the next year. Well that is enough of that. Glad you are up and walking. The leak will stop or Martha can just call RON the PLUMMER and put a stop to the leak. But sounds like everything is under control now. Soon you will be on your way home just takes time.
How is Marcus doing at home? Fine we all hope. His life getting back to a norm now.
It’s terrific to hear that it won’t be long before you can go home! Your colleagues here are thinking of you often and following your progress closely. It’s wonderful to know that, despite all of the ups and downs, you are making great progress, and will soon be in much more comfortable surroundings. Keep up the great work!!!
Martha, thank you so much for your faithful attention to documenting Scott’s recovery. It’s a privilege for us, as Scott’s friends and associates, to be able to understand what’s happening every day!
Sending my best wishes and prayers to your whole family…
Your name was mentioned a number of times during the two day Mission Definition Review for the Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS) Mission conducted in the GSFC Building 8 auditorium. It was in reference to your work (with assistance from another GSFC colleague) concerning the various aspects of the MMS orbital debris assessment (ODA). Topics that were mentioned included end of mission disposal methods, orbital debris reentry calculations, and whipple shielding for the propulsion tanks. Things went OK, so I’m guessing that you didn’t get any ODA-related RFAs!
It was great spending time with you Wednesday evening. You look good and your voice IS getting stronger. You’ve now got a bed and safety bar (I found the studs) waiting for you at home. I’m looking forward to seeing you there soon (well at least out of the bed and not while you are using the safety bar).
Message for visitors (From Saturday’s visits and experience with other patients) - Remember, short visits are best - both you and Scott will want to be together longer, but by the time he realizes he’s worn out - he’s too worn out. It’ll be hard to say good bye, but best to plan to come back again another day. There’s nothing quite like visitors to help perk up a recovering patient - it also reminds them and everyone else who they are … we ALL know Scott is not just a patient!
Scott - You’re doing great and we’re looking forward to our next visit with you!
I just finished reading all the comments and they are wonderful!! I know downtown Baltimore is a little too far away for quick visit but a comment is almost as good! Please keep them coming. It is wonderful to know so many folks have visited the website and are thinking of me.
I am feeling so much better now. The pain from the operation is minimal. I still have to deal with the peripheral side effects, though, like the lack of a voice and the intense pain in my fingers. Hopefully, we can either we can fix them or deal with them in the near future. The important thing is to keep my spirits up, and that is were visits and the website comments are really help in my recovery. You all play more of a part than you know.
Scott: the folks in the IDC are thinking of you and keeping up with your progress via the website. We know you will do well. Hang in there. Hope to see you soon.
Bruce and others of the IDC.
Well good news is all around today. Sounds like you are getting better and feeling better. Visitor’s and comments help don’t they.
Well, my husband came home yesterday afternoon. Getting better but not quit there yet. Pneumonia is improving but of course the emphysema, spots on lungs and liver will not go away only get worst. He has a hard head and doesn’t listen to anyone. Maybe this is a male thing. ha ha He continues to smoke and not eat properly. I really can’t understand why I have been in the nursing profession for 43 yrs and don’t know how to deal with this sick man. I guess I better go back to school and learn a new trade.
Soon you will be come home. I will visit you at your house. Glad to hear the plummer was in and stopped the leak. Now we need to work on the fingers and voice. Have you try singing lately.
Scott, you know I care and worry about you everyday. Keep up the good work and I will see you soon.
Martha you are wonderful too. It’s been a long road for you and you are an angel for all that you have done to keep us posted. Scott is a lucky man to have you. Tell him I said so too.
Keep improving and writing you comments in Scott. Tell Marcus Hi and to keep on improving too.
I would tell you to hang in there, but everyone else has said that . Besides I have seen you hanging (in trees) and it ain’t a pretty sight. So how about just pulling up a comfy seat and check out the Baltimore skyline and seascape. Lean back and injoy 12 raisenetts and a sip (small) of water. Dream of a place far away ( not home there’s too much work you could do there ) and a sweet wife and a couple of braty kids by your side ( the braty part was just to see if they read this ). Carol ask if you had tried singing yet. Don’t go there!!! The staff is not ready for that kind of panic alarm.
We love you big guy Enjoy while you can. see you soon
Dad and Ann
I have been reading the log entries and have laughed and cried along with them. Please know Claudia and I are continually praying for you and your family.
I got asked if I might be able to do som,e ODA work of rJPL. Seems Pater Barrett has left and they need somone with some expertise. I probably have to ake a trip out there real soon to “meet ad be met”, so I can be approved.
Well today is Saturday, September 23, 2006 and nothing much going on. My husband is improving a little. His breathing is still quite bad and requires the use of oxygen off and on. Eating a little better.
Now for you. How are you doing today? Up moving little move. Getting visitors in at a slow pace. Enjoy them. Visitors have strong healing power especially to make you smile or laugh.
Martha hasn’t been on for a day or so. Hope she is alright. Please give her my love.
Dad said he didn’t want to go there with your singing. I think you sure surprise everyone with one of you famous songs. Record it I really want to hear it myself. All jokes aside I hope your vocal cords are improving and your throat is starting to feel better.
Okay I am going to really make you laugh now. My doctor told me I need to get out in the open air more and relax. Go for a bike ride. So I bought me an EASY RIDER bike. The bike is so nice. Goes up hills so easy. Well, I have never rode a bike with hand gears or hand brakes. So my neighbor told me just to use the back brake til I got use to using both of them. I was coming that the road in front of my house and applied the back brake. Only problem the bike came to a stand still and I was still on it because the seat was to high and my feet didn’t touch the ground. I guess you know the rest. Yes, Over I went really hard on the hard road. Nothing broke thank the LORD. Plenty of bruises and cuts. I had to go to PT for heat treatments on my side and arm that was all black and blue. Had x-rays the whole nine yards. Hurt my right ankle pretty bad and now I have inflamation and am having that taken care of. If it doesn’t improve soon the doctor is putting me in the hospital on IV’s. Now laugh. ha ha I am selling the bike. I will get me a three wheeler. That will be safer.
Hope time to stop and give someone else a chance to talk with you. Continue to improve. My Love and Prays are with you all.
We are soooooooo glad to hear that “Daddy” is coming home! Scott, you amaze us with your speedy recovery…I guess the “goodie bags” helped! hahahaha!!!
Please continue to keep this site up to date because there are many of us who check it daily. Try not to do too much at home, just relax and like Uncle Steve and Ann said, “enjoy” your downtime.
Well, I am indeed home. I came home this afternoon to kids in the driveway and a few family members inside (and a camera crew in my lawn). When I walked in the door I saw that Shannon had made the sweetest Get Well card, and we hung it in the sickbay right where I can see it when I wake up. When I left for the hospital I thought the sick bay was finished, but Martha Dave O and Paul have improved it alot, and filled in all the little details besides.
I’ve been changing my own dressings, and anything else they would let me get away with, for the past couple days so that I’m pretty comfortable with the routines. My goodness, what a pile of medications - 32 pills a day (15 in one time slot), and 14 different types of pills. Plus insulin injections four times a day and two nose sprays. But if that’s what it takes to make this work, then it’s a piece of cake. My sleep schedule is all screwed up, so I took advantage of some quiet time after everyone went to bed to set up all the pills for the next week in pill boxes for each day.
It’s great to be home! The place just has a feel, a smell, even little sounds that say “This is where I belong”. And tomorrow I finally get to take a shower and wash my hair! I may just feel completely human after that. I am up for visits, but don’t be surprised if I need to stop for a five minute recharge nap. Make sure you call ahead, though, so that the crowd can be kept to a reasonable level. Of course you can visit with Martha and the kids as well. I really wanted to go to the Solstice ceremony tonight (the nurse was OK with a short visit), but got talked out of it by a few people with more sense than I have at the moment.
The comments and visits have been so valuable to me in keeping a positive attitude when little things went wrong. Thank you all.
Welcome home, Scott. I understand Marcus joined you at the hospital as you were released — what an amazing example of love and courage. We admire you all so much.
What a treat to see you last night. I am totally amazed by your strength and progress. May any discomfort you feel be compensated for by this new lease you have on life!! I am sure that your positive attitude has made a big difference in your recovery.
Martha, please take care of yourself, too. Maybe you can get some rest now that you’re not making daily trips to Baltimore.
YEAH!!!! You’re home!!! I know it feels good, sounds good and smells good!
I can only imagine the warm welcome you got!
I Just wanted to say, “HEY Y’ALL” and ditto all the positive energy that everyone has already posted! We’re cheering you on to more recovery and smiles!
Today, Monday, September 25, 2006 and all is well here. How did the shower feel. Bet you are like a new man now. Scott, I have never gotten the chance to say THANK YOU to you. You never forget my Birthday on 9/11. It reallys means a lot to me since it was a bad day from start to finish. Here you were laying up in a hospital after major surgery and you still remembered and had Martha e-mail me. That was one of the sweetest things anyone could have done. THANK YOU.
How is living arrangements there in Sick Bay. I know Martha worked hard to have everything ready and special for you. Girls are glad to have their DADDY home once again. Just rest and enjoy your family, friends and love ones around you. Don’t rush.
GSFC has not change. We all pray and read about you. I am still waiting to see the before and after pictures. Nurses are cusious. When do we get to see the movie. Camera people sound like they have been pretty business.
How is Marcus doing. Good we all hope. Tell him he is tough and we think about him too during his recovery.
Okay this is enough, got to get back to work. Rest, Rest, Rest.
What is with Shannon and “chicken butt”? Does she like them that much? Well, I now know what to get her for Christmas. She does have a fenced in back yard…
If she is really good I will “try” to make it a hen instead of a roster. We need Scott to rest.
Hang in there BROTHER! Back to Nalson 7 (as you knew would be likley), they will take of you! I just wished you could have had a bit longer break from the Hospital. We’ll be back at JHH on Friday, so hopefully we’ll see you in the OPC as opposed to making me walk up to the FLOOR. Take care!
Awww man, stupid fevers ruin all the fun. I hope you can go home again very soon, Scott. And that you are being spoiled rotten, because that just comes with the territory when you have any major medical stuff done. Demand pastries!
“There’s no place like home … there’s no place like home … (3 clicks of the heels) … there’s no place like home.” You are back over the rainbow! I am so happy for you. I wish you and your family continued strength to overcome all the unknown challenges that still lay ahead.
Here is where I want to say something supportive and funny and upbeat and caring that brings a smile to your face despite the tough times you are going through - maybe I should plagiarize a greeting card! I’m sure being back in the hospital is very disheartening, but I’m equally sure that you are keeping the doctor’s and nurses entertained with your attempts at sign language (hey, maybe that is why they wanted you back in there!) - You will have to get Roak to demonstrate “Swing Low Sweet Chariot for the Hearing Impaired” next Pennsic (we would much rather see his attempts at sign language than listen to him attempt to sing). We are wishing you courage, comfort, and a speedy recovery!
Love,
The Rozakii
Okay I am lost. I haven’t been on for a few days. Scott came home and was doing fine. Now I am reading that he is back in the hospital with a fever. A fever will come and go. This happens true after surgery and weeks later. But it is a warning sign that something there needs help. You have made it thru the worst. This is a minor set back and you will tackle it fine and be back home before you can blink a eye. Don’t rush. I know you are so tired of hospital, doctors, nurses, needles, etc. But take things slow. Let things heal at there rate not yours. Of course, this is the nursing part coming out. Scott if I wasn’t dealing with a sick husband myself at home and all his medical problems, I would offer to come to your house and help Martha out taking care of you. But unfortunately, he requires someone with him 24/7 too.
Martha I know you are so much needed of rest. Hang in there sweetheart. Scott will get better and things will be bright again for the both of you. Keep us posted please.
Well here I am at work 5:30 am and all is well here and with me. Now the weekend has past and what is the latest with Scott? I only want to hear good news. Hope the fever and the infections are gone. Keep me posted.
Hey Scott both of my teams REDSKINS 36 - JAQ 30 and Ravens can’t remember the exact score on that game. They WON - Yeah. GO SKINS and RAVENS. But what put the icing on the cake is that Tony Stewart won his race also. Came across the finish line with no gas and took the checker flag. These guys sure make Joe Gibbs a Happy Camper and me too.
Now it’s your turn - get better and get out of there.
Here are a couple of stories that I remember from Norman Cousins book, Head First. He was at the UCLA Medical Center and when doctors couldn’t cure a patients illness/cancer, Norman went in and talked to them.
Case 1): A lady has breast cancer and the doctors can’t cure it. It turns out that 8 years ago, someone had broken into their house and shot (killed) her husband, mistaking him for his twin brother. 8 years later he is coming up for parole and making threats to her. He gets out and continues with the threats. Soon, he gets put back in. After that, her cancer is gone. Poof!! (my comment)
Case 2): A football game in Oklahoma. Someone complained of being sick. It was determined to be food poisoning and that it was due to the concession stand below the stands. A big announcement was made. Then, everybody started getting sick. 100 people had to go to the hospital. 5 ambulances were in use. Later, it was determined that nothing was wrong with the food in that particular concession stand. (My comment here) So, how did they get sick?
Norman’s book has many more examples of this kind of thing.
Don’t be a sickie!! You are healthy!! Believe it!!
I’d post another joke, but since your kids seem to be reading this also, I better not. Ok, here’s one. What did Napoleon do with his armies? Put them up his sleevies. I’d say it’s for the kids, but they might not know who Napoleon is yet.
Scott–Trying to keep up with you is like chasing a yo yo. One heck of a ride– hang on!!!! We are all with you– On the home news side— you should see
the pond at BaBas. Only lasted 50 years– haha— needed a complete rebuild
— it looks great again. It will be ready for some fishing in the near future.
Meet you there. Best to you. LOVE D & D
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. It’s been great to be able to follow your progress with this website. Sounds like it’s been quite the “adventure”. You’ll get through this and be stronger than ever! Everyone’s pulling for you and with that much support you can’t miss.
As for that laugh… no offense to the blondes out there but this is the only one that I can come up with that’s clean and friendly:
How many blondes does it take to screw in a lightbulb? One. The blonde holds the lightbulb and the world revolves around her
Hey Scott,
What an ordeal for you and for everyone but how nice it will be when its finally over and you get to be the person you really are but healthy and full of life. I think of you all every day and pray that all will be well. I love you all.
The Outlaw Katie.
It is 6am, and I am attempting to get Richard ready for school bus after he feeds himself and his animals while WEARING A TIE.
Scott, all the Guinea Pigs sqeak their hello (and give me a fruit or veggie), the Hotots and other rabbits thump hello and Joey’s hampster is up and running around (he is nocoturnal). The roosters are up awake crowing at 5:30am just to tell you to get better. White ducks (six) are so dumb. Its a shame their is no audio.
After my surgery last October, just when they were about to check me out of the hospital, and I finally allowed myself to optimistically look forward to civilian life and edible food, the god(s) of medicine played this card on me:
“You have a nasty infection! Return immediately to Intensive Care. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200, do not go home anytime soon.”
I clearly remember how much that sucked. That was when my mood and outlook went to hell, and I hit bottom emotionally.
Of course, the good news is that the hospital has the resources to fight the infection. And right now, that’s the next step towards a full recover.
Nonetheless, a step backwards, however temporary a setback, sucks. But we’re all looking forward to the gradual reappearance of a healthy and fully function Scott!
Hey Scott & Matha,
I know that it has to be hard for you but look on the bright side we are still waiting to make our cruise plans We are waiting for you guys then IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN I want you to know that we are here for ou even if it is just for some company to talk to or come visit you at JHH. You just let u know and yes we will bring the pudding this time I hope that things work out better for you in the near future so please keep your head up high and keep on fighting it’s worth it all the way we miss you guys and will be here for you all no mater what
We love you guys Take care
Love,
Kim & Marcus
Hello brother. I’m sorry to hear you’re back in the hospital but you will be out and home soon enough. We (Morgana and I) think about you guys (including Martha, Shannon and Erin) all the time and want you to know that there lots of love and good thoughts being sent your way.
Take your time, take care and get ready for Pennsic!
“Hey, Y’all”! They really do talk like that down here (SC) and it’s easy to become part of that. haha. Thanks for keeping us posted, even in your most exhausting moments! As usual, our prayers and thoughts continue to be with you guys! When the time is right, give me a current phone number, cell or room, that’s appropriate to call and chat on!
Hey BOTHER! It is so hard to keep veiw of the goal through all the haze sometimes. Just try to get a bit of rest and know that we are all thinking and praying for you! A Hull boy NEVER quits, so keep you head up and KEEP WALKING!
Today October 5th and learning things that I really didn’t want to learn. I want to hear that Scott was home and doing GREAT. Not still there in the hospital. We continue to pray for a great guy who is going to beat the downs. Got to remember everything that body has and is still going thru. It just takes time to heal inside and out. There are going to be hills to climb to get better but look down the road to the big Blue Ocean where all the fun awaits you. Get over the hill now each day is an approvemnt. Fever will go and infections will heal and you will be back home before you know it.
Scott, I don’t know if you know John Mather. I work with him in Bldg 21. Well, He just won the NOBEL prize in Physics. The first and only NASA employee to ever win a NOBEL prize. Well Love he wished you a speedy recovery and said to hand in there. Goddard people are tough and you can prove that. How does it feel to have a Get Well wish from a NOBEL Prize winner. Something huh.
Martha glad you and the girls got out and had a little fun. Best thing that you did. The Ren is so much fun. You hang in there too.
I talk with God all the time and he has promised me good things ahead for the Hull Family.
Hang in there Love.
Hello! It’s Thursday, 7 pm, and although you are not back on Nelson 7, you WILL be tomorrow. And, as you said, Scott, that’s a step closer to home. Positive thinking. And prayers going every which way for you, you know?? Part of each workday is answering the questions about YOU! So after our visit Wed. night, your Dad and I are encouraged that your progress is only going on the upswing. Twelve chocolate raisins devoured? daily or hourly? We will need to replenish your supply. MUCH LOVE TO YOU! Ann
Your Branch at GSFC is thinking about you and hopes you get well soon. Today we took John Azollini out for his retirement today. We were talking about the time we all went bowling and had a great time. And, we know you probably would have been with us today to enjoy this branch function as well. So we hope for a speedy recovery and things get better soon so you can be with us. Martha thanks for keeping us informed and our prayers are with your family.
Just wanted to let you know, Big Brother and I have been keeping an eye on your website to see how you are doing. So sorry to hear about your setbacks. But Hopkins is the best, and they will get you through it. Hang in there, believe me I know how frustrating it is for both of you!!!
Martha, if you have my home e-mail will you get in touch with me?
From Kathleen: Hello guys. I hope you are doing well. Shannon, since you said, “chicken butt,” I say, “monkey brains” or “banana brains”! I hope this makes you smile. I hope we can get together soon.
From Chuck: Thanks for inviting me into your hallucination, but I’d rather see you in person. It was great talking to you on the phone, but that was before all this latest infection nonsense. Get better and come home soon.
From Evan: Keep making great progress and don’t give up!
From Jeannie: What’s left to say? Kathleen stole all my lines. I am so sorry you feel cruddy. This has been a wild week and you and your family are in our thoughts and hearts. I wish we were closer to be of more direct help. We’ll come up with something. Much love from all the Leonards.
From Bella: Woof, bark! (I can disco. Kathleen taught me tonight.)
Though I’ve never met Scott, I’ve been following your blog and thinking/praying for all of you. I hope things keep getting better from here on out!
Things are okay at work - they finally moved our team to NBP - it is really nice! Even the ones who didn’t want to move seem to be happier about it. It saves most of us about 20 minutes of travel time, though our Shape instructors have to use that time to get to/from their classes. There were some sad events which made our first couple weeks very depressing, but we had our first pig-in, and the mood is much more upbeat now - our boss bought us lots of chocolate!
Sounding good tonight BROTHER! Kick that bacteria in ass and move on! TONS of time, so no rushing to eat, sit walk or talk. Fast is Slow and Slow is fast… I’m gonna try to make it up there soon, so maybe I’ll bring you some treats(if you can think of anything). Keep up the good work!
News from Pittsburgh: The boys went to Portsville Steam Show this weekend. They helped make 400 gal. cider, collected trash, helped run coal & wood feed 1917 steam traction engine. They even blew the 4 different steam whistles for you, Scott. They camped there for 3 days with no showers and covered apple pulp, coal dirt and I-don’t-even-know-what-all. Robert and Joey were so dirty (and sticky). They took and set up the petting zoo, including 6 rabbits, 6 cavies, 2 ducks, 8 chickens, a goat named Annie the Nanny and your favorite, roosters. I know how much you love 5 am crowing. Richard saw the new girlfriend Kristen there (she has many relatives there). I got to come home last night to feed all the remaining beasts (and shower). We all (the boys, all the beasts and myself) miss you a speedy recovery or ALL will come visit you…
Glad to hear the weekend brought better news and that you are feeling better, Scott. We hope to come visit on the 14th for some of the afternoon. We’ll coordinate with Martha in case a visit with you is possible — at home would be nice but we’ll come to the hospital if needed.
Sounds like you are climbing up the hill now. Like the others in there comment take you time. You will get to the top and then you will go down the hill on the other side and be Home with your sweet wife and lovely daughters. Stay as long as you have to and get all the infections out and problems behind you before you come home again.
My prayers and thoughts continue with both of you. I wish I could take a few minutes to visit but with my husbands health problems I don’t get too much time to do anything even sleep anymore. Martha knows how that is.
Keep pushing Scott we all love you hear and things really sound good.
Got to run now I am at work and you know when GSFC wants something you better get it done. ha ha
Back from the Third World…and to stay put for the next three or so months…at least… Scott, I want to deliver the best wishes for you from all the bunch Camacho-Omiste family in Bolivia (more than 70 people…and increasing….) They all know you…much more now because they are following this great space! The prayers from them (in Spanish, of course) are still going to Heaven for you and your wonderful family…. Just to keep you up with the news…’of the “Hull Bunch”…(Camacho, Blau, Hoffman), well, I arrived to see Marcus, yesterday enjoying a beautiful weather at the Mount Airy Fall Festival…I am sure he was thinking of you. maybe next year we can all go together…. Daniella (the “great pumpkin” and Djung had the three little girls in arms, backs and strollers…and of course, her tummy… Kim and Rileigh got to stuff a scarecrow to take home… Jesse joined us after running the Army 10-miler and was proud to tell us he got 2nd place of 200 runners in his age category…. Claudin and Lucinda as of this time, are in Boston…both running…and will be back there again in two weeks…ranking up to compete in Feb in the Nationals…and all of us in Germantown…looking forward and anxiously to Andrea’s return from the West Coast after seven years?¡!¿… Thanksgiving will be a good time for all of us thank “a la BaBa and PopPop” way for all the blessings and people we have in the HULL Family… P.S. You always were a Wonderful Guy…and now you are still getting Better yet… We are so proud of you… for everything you are….and that is a lot. Love, Tia Teresa.
I know that you probably figured that you are an engineer and this stuff is just plumbing; you would buck the curve, get your new liver, and be back to Dalhraidian Corps of Engineers right away. Didn’t happen yet, but like everything else hard, you will get through this and join us again on the Island and at Pennsic and around our fires. Just stick to it and know that it sucks now but it will get better. You are way tougher than a pile of bacteria!
Scott-
Hope you continue to make progress through your tough times. Also hope you did get outside for the nice weather we had.
Let us know what your Goddard friends can do. We are thinking about you and praying for you.
Keep your spirits high!
-Russ
Scott ,
Sorry it’s taken so long to drop you a line… just more well wishes from another GSFC contact. LRO and ST8 are keeping me busy, but I follow your progress as best as I can and try to send you postive thoughts and vibes. Hope you can get home soon.
– Rich Sanidad
Cheer up, Little Sis, they WILL fix this. Just be patient and strong through the “and one step back” part. When this is done and he is home for good, it will be worth it to have had this transplant. Honest.
Alright….after reading about the fevers all I can say is stop being so “Hot”…if you weren’t so “Hot” you wouldn’t be running these fevers….dress down a little, you know, don’t shave or wash your hair. I know that these things don’t really disqualify one from being “Hot” but….give it a shot.
Hang in there, brother. We’re thinking of the whole family and especially Scott. We keep you in our prayers and are constantly hoping you get a break. Things look grim now, but it will get better. Just remember that.
Hello Scott and Martha, Martha’s updates are so very helpful!!! That fever and infection just stimying many people it sounds like. And not fun to read about, but DO CAUSE PRAYERS TO BE UTTERED right then and there! Personally I have never sent so many emails in my times at the computer, but know that so, so many friends of Scott and Martha and Steve and Ann, really care and really want to know all that is going on. Bless you, Scott, for your patience. Discouragement is okay for now but that smile back on your face is what we pray for as the healing gets going. We do love you much.Ann&Dad
Keeping swinging there BROTHER! I will meet with Dr.M tomorrow at 0900 then I’ll stop-by to visit for a bit. Try to get some rest, and I’ll see you in the AM.
It looks like we’ll be at Hopkins Pediatric Gastroenterology unit Monday afternoon for a consultation about Brendan’s tummy (his doctor says it is not serious but he wants Hopkins to look at it) so I hope to be able to visit with you then. Glad to hear that the infection stuff is being kicked out. Hey, about what Taog said, you’ll always be ‘hot’ to us….. the grungier the better as long as you are in Plaid.
Scott,
My mom has been keeping me in the loop about what’s been going on, and she recently liked me to this website.
(In no partcular order) The man I remember who taught me how to build a fire in the pouring rain, who taught me how to play pool, who pulled me off of the van when the rope burned my legs on the zip-line, who gave me my first REAL kendo lesson, and was the first Eagle recipient whose ceremony I remember attending, is too tough to succumb to some infection.
My friend, you have been one of my few role models in my early life. You have taught me that one can be smart without sacrificing the “tough”. Every now and again, I will say something and think that it was reminant of your humor.
You will beat this and overcome. I have faith in that.
Patrick
ps–when I have a chance to truly escape from Jersey for more than a day, I’ll make sure I stop by…
Goddess bless you all! I will light a candle for you tonight and say a healing prayer. Martha, I wish I was there to help you. You must be so very tired. Hugs to you and the girls and a very gentle hug to Scott.
Scott, Martha, Shannon, and Erin - we are all thinking of you! Get well soon so we can make you some apple pie! I hope you get to come home again asap!
Well there is nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said. My prayers are with you. You are at the #1 hospital in the country and they will get you out of there. Things are tough I know but it will get better. They seem to be right up on things when things go down.
The day will come soon that you will be able to get out and breath the fresh air. You will look back at all you and Martha and the girls have gone thru and tell yourselve that it was worth it. You will a new man.
I have been getting people around GSFC to donate their leave to you. So relax we are looking out for you on this end.
Take care and I want good news next time I read the Status.
Maybe the doctors should have consulted with Scott on how to solve the problem of how to get the best image of his liver. Those are the kind of puzzles he seems to thrive on figuring out — okay, so engineering and medicine are not exactly the same, but he’s smart and might have some insights! How interesting to be at the cutting edge, but I’d also be fine with a clear protocol.
Sending you much love and good wishes. This kind of roller coaster ride would be banned in most amusement parks. You are such dare devils…. Hang in there and know so many folks are pulling for you.
Kathleen went to a gypsy theme birthday party last night and there was a fortune teller who insists the future is bright for you all!! I figure it doesn’t hurt to get support for all sectors.
Thanks for the updates, Martha. I know you must be exhausted. Please take care of yourself.
Martha. we are all there with you, Scott and the girls in spirit if not in person. I am thinking about you all the time. You will have a whole school and parish praying for you on Tuesday. If you feel a need for more moral support in person, all you have to do is ask, not only from me but everyone on this website, Martha.
Awwww man, I’m so sorry there are more complications. I will rouse knitters, and they wil, er knit. But they’ll think really loving, healing thoughts while they knit. Holding you in the light.
I’m thinking about you a lot, and i can’t thank you enough for this site! You are doing a wonderful job! big hugs from me….complications suk….but we’re sending all the good energy we can….
Hi Scott,
We have been reading Martha’s updates and keeping up on your status. We are sending good thoughts and prayers to you and Martha. We know you can beat this. We are all with you. One last major hurdle. Hang in there! Let us know when you want some company and we will be there (with more pictures). Only have a few more hundred pictures to show you (new stuff). All our best.
Love,
Dick and Darlene
Hey Scott and Martha,
Scott, remember when you stayed with us that summer while you attended UMBC? You called my prayer team “The God Squad”. We have lived in several states since then, and are now happily retired in Huntsville, AL. “The God Squad” is spread over half the Eastern states, and lots of them are praying for you right now. (Including little members, ages 3-7 yrs old.)
Peace, rest and good health to you!
Lou and Camille
Prayers and thoughts with you all today, Tuesday! We’ll keep checking the updates! Glad they found the cause and can now work some progress and healing! Let us know when phone calls are allowed and a current number!
Hey Scott (and Martha, Shannon, Erin, Marcus…), Remember all the healing and calming thoughts and prayers directed to you today and all thru this journey.
Just thought of this, after all these surgeries, you’ll be carrying the new map/layout of Pensic space around with you. Maybe you can give Steeleye a Sharpie pen to fill in any missing areas.
I enjoyed the comment that Charles Holder wrote about remembering all the healing and calming thoughts and prayers are directed to you today and thru this journey. This is what life is all about. We all have a journey to follow. But you have had your share.
Next stop of the journey is out of that Hospital and home again doing the things you want to do. Hang in there sweetheart you are a tough cookie. We are here and praying for you everyday.
It was good to see you yesterday and have a good few laughs. You looked good and your voice was back to the Gallen I know. I will check in on you after the surgery today. You are in our thoguhts and prayers.
Martha,
That was a quick jump from “more testing” to SURGERY! Well give him a pat on the bacl for me, and please keep me up to speed on how he is doing! Take care!
OK. You’ve got your two donor volunteers (the Dave’s) and the actual donor all posting one after the other. This is a good sign. Come out of the surgery well.
We are pulling for you, too. Be strong, be tough, and beat this thing. We will check in regularly for updates, but know it will be awhile before there is news. We are sending healing thoughts and good wishes to everyone in the family. We are sending wishes for good judgment and great skill to your surgical team. FIGHT, Scott. We know you can do this….
Charles & I are finally back on dry land and healthy … so, we’ll plan to stop by as soon as we can. We had another great cruise, so would love to share stories with you, Martha, Marcus, and Kim to help you plan yours. This cruise was just what we needed now, and we had booked it a full year ago … it’s helpful to have something so fun to look forward to! We snorkeled, snorkeled, and snorkeled some more. One of our new friends from the cruise had surgery 2 weeks before the cruise and her doctor told her she should not go … she has MD and has had a lot of close calls, so she opted to go and enjoy the cruise. She took it easy when she needed to … swam with the dolphins, and had a great time!
Glad to hear that things seemed to have gone well! I have been checking this blog all day, and I can now finally get some sleep. Good job to both Scott & Martha! Take care and keep us all up to date.
We are so thrilled and relieved. Did you get some rest, Martha? You are juggling so much; I wish we were closer to be more help. Wow. The good news is so welcome. I can feel my stomach start to relax a bit. If this journey is affecting me this way, I can only imagine the intensity with which it is affecting all of you.
Be well and continue to improve, Scott. I’m amazed that your liver has grown so much. I wonder what this means for Marcus’ liver. Is it back to full or almost full size? Incredible.
Hi Scott,
Just read Martha’s surgery update. What a relief. Keep getting stronger everyday. As soon as you are up to visitors we will visit again. Can’t wait till we can visit you at home. Love to all.
Dick and Darlene
Hey Scott & Martha

I hope that you still keep your mind in the right place and keep thinking that it is going to get better We are here for you guys if you need anything just please let us know No matter if it is just for company or just a phone call to talk! We are here! Talk to you soon You are still in our prayers Take care we love you!

Now we know the name of this soap opera, ‘Survivor!’. Its been a roller coaster ride reading the Daily-Status every day. I will rest easier when Scott goes home and there are no more updates.
I won’t have to wait for the BBC version to know who deserves an award. Thanks Marcus for giving of yourself (literally). Thanks Martha for being there for Scott. And thanks to the Johns Hopkins doctors and nurses who are so dedicated.
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The old liver RULES!!!!!!!!!WOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
I love you Scott, I love you Marcus, I love liver soooo much I’ll never eat it again! getting some sleep now
xoxoxoxoxoxox

I hope you’re doing fine. Hang in there. My family send their love.
I have a joke for you. What did the dog say when his tail was chopped off?
Answer: “It won’t be long now!”
I read that in the paper yesterday.
And guess what? I got a trumpt from my school. It’s really loud. I was going to get a tuba, but I couldn’t rent it from the school, so I decided to just do the trumpet.
Get better soon. I hope Erin and I can get together soon.
Hi Mr Scott,
I hope you will feel better soon. Sitting in a hospital bed is NO fun. (I bet!) I hope you make progress and can come home soon. Hope to see you soon ASAP.
Hi Mr Scott,
I hope you will feel better soon. Sitting in a hospital bed is NO fun. (I bet!) I hope you make progress and can come home soon. Hope to see you ASAP.
I truly hope the corrective action has been successful. I also hope you will be back in Nelson 7 so I can come see you before I go to Japan. If not I’ll visit you somewhere when I get back. The great thing about the Internet is that I should be able to keep up to date wherever I am. I check the website about twice a day. What an ordeal you must be going through. I do not like hospitals, I imagine you put it a lot stronger. My QA focus asks, was there not a check that could have prevented this? Perhaps you are the “lessons learned”. Tough role but there’s no one better to be the pioneer. Speedy recovery guy.
Glad to hear the surgery went well. Can someone please send scott’s new liver a memo stating that there are no frequent flyer miles for surgery? apprently it missed that memo somewhere…(just kidding)
Anywho, i’m incredibly thankful for being able to check and see what’s going on….i love you both (and the girls too..) and as i’m typing I’m visualizing us all together — circled around the campfire, passing a cup, celebrating that which is important. We’ll have that day again soon.
Love and strength to you both…continue to heal and share that beautiful energy that that two of you share…
In case this happens to any other friend reading this blog —
Refresh the “Status” page if it appears that there hasn’t been an update for several days.
I checked several times Wednesday, and the last Status which came up was Tuesday Oct. 17 morning. “Okay,” I thought, “Martha was just too pooped after Scott’s successful surgery to write anything.” When I checked this morning, the Status page still showed no update. So I got worried. Then I checked this “Comments” section and saw all the notes about Scott’s successful surgery. I went back to the Status page (still showing 10/17 AM), and hit refresh. I guess my computer was showing me a cached copy of the page.
Okay. Exhale now. Speedy recovery, Scott. Martha, enjoy that scotch now — when Scott’s liver is back to full funtion, he gets to drink again, right?
Aw, come on Dave (Vierling, that is) … you don’t honestly think that good, strong, patriotic Ranger livers drink, do you?? (Great tip about the refresh!)
Martha - Breathe …
Scott, It’s good that there’s so much for you to look forward to … keep planning … it’ll all come!
Thanks for the latest news. Yikes. I am so sorry you are dealing with these fevers and chills. No fun. I’m also sorry you had such a hard time getting the blood cultures. Extra no fun. Please know you are in our thoughts.
I am happy you are in a great hospital and seem to have caring staff working with you. Remember that courage we were talking about during your time at home, Scott? Now’s a good time to tap into it. You are strong and brave, even if you resist the labels. You, too, Martha!! Much love to you and the girls.
Wow!!! You two are SOME first class people… As several said…what a roller coaster!..what can we say…keep on hanging there…Baba and Mamina have a candle everyday on our credenza, to intercede up there for you, Scott and Martha and the little ladies… We will have to have a MAJOR family reunion in 2007…to celebrate this experience and the great persons you are!!! GOD IS WITH YOU. Love, Teresa and the rest of the Jesse “Hull bunch”
Hey Scott–Teresa had a great idea–A real blowout Hull family reunion in 07 to celebrate your success. What do you think— any ideas??? I know we can’t do it in August. You pick the date. We will see you soon lto start the planning. We will call you soon to plan a visit. Stay well D and D
martha, please pass along to Scott, that Kim and I are thinking about you BOTH! I am so very sorry that things are not progressing a bit better. Just keep your head-up and try not to let details get you down. Hopefully we’ll see you soon, stay strong!
Hey, Can we consider the “Columbia, SC School District 5″ in those family reunion plans? June (while we’re up for OC) or July (while we’re up for DCL) or Fall Holiday? …just a thought…
Scott, I’ll see you either way during those times (if not before), but it would be fun to celebrate with everyone! You deserve it! Hang in there and keep the faith!

Martha,
Thank you for the address.

Hey there,
I’m so glad to be able to read this to keep updated. I’m thinking of you guys everyday, and I wish for you strength and patience and more of the fabulous good luck and fantastic healing which is allowing the two guys to wreck the curve. I look forward to the day when I can witness the big smiles produced by having a healthy Scott around.
I love you all.
Cheers,

Scott,
We’ve been keeping up with your progress.

Scott,
Riley and I walk by your house every morning and think of you. So glad for this site to get updates. All I know is that everytime I would see you and ask how you were feeling….you ALWAYS answered with something amazingly positive and always with a smile.
Please know that all your neighbors are thinking of you and hoping for your steady recovery.

Scottie & Martha,
News sounds good today.

Marcus wants you to tell Scott to hang in there it will all be worth it
We are here for you guys if you need anything!!!! I mean anything
Let me know if there is anything you need me to bring down on Friday
Marcus said that he is going to bring Scott some Vanilla Pudding down for him so tell him he can look forward to that. With Marcus as a ranger it is hard for him to leave with Scott still in the hospital because you go in as a team and come out as a team. It was very hard for Marcus to leave his teamate behind
Hang in there Scott we are behind you 100%
We love you

We can bring dinner up on a weekend, too. Let us know if the patient has any dietary restrictions. And if the girls want to play with us in Alexandria, we’d love to have them.

Hi Scott & Martha,
Things have really improved since I wrote last.
We love you and I will keep in touch when I can.

Scott,
Here is some GSFC engineering-geek information:
Your name was mentioned a number of times during the two day Mission Definition Review for the Magnetospheric MultiScale (MMS) Mission conducted in the GSFC Building 8 auditorium. It was in reference to your work (with assistance from another GSFC colleague) concerning the various aspects of the MMS orbital debris assessment (ODA). Topics that were mentioned included end of mission disposal methods, orbital debris reentry calculations, and whipple shielding for the propulsion tanks. Things went OK, so I’m guessing that you didn’t get any ODA-related RFAs!
Best wishes and good luck,
Sam

Message for visitors (From Saturday’s visits and experience with other patients) - Remember, short visits are best - both you and Scott will want to be together longer, but by the time he realizes he’s worn out - he’s too worn out. It’ll be hard to say good bye, but best to plan to come back again another day. There’s nothing quite like visitors to help perk up a recovering patient - it also reminds them and everyone else who they are … we ALL know Scott is not just a patient!
Scott - You’re doing great and we’re looking forward to our next visit with you!

Hi Sweetheart,
Well good news is all around today.

Dream of a place far away ( not home there’s too much work you could do there ) and a sweet wife and a couple of braty kids by your side ( the braty part was just to see if they read this ). Hi Scott,
Well today is Saturday, September 23, 2006 and nothing much going on.

Thank you all.
time to try some sleep,
Scott

You never forget my Birthday on 9/11. It reallys means a lot to me since it was a bad day from start to finish. Here you were laying up in a hospital after major surgery and you still remembered and had Martha e-mail me. That was one of the sweetest things anyone could have done. THANK YOU.
How is living arrangements there in Sick Bay. I know Martha worked hard to have everything ready and special for you. Girls are glad to have their DADDY home once again. Just rest and enjoy your family, friends and love ones around you. Don’t rush.

Hi Scott,
Wow, you actually are reading these comments!

Hi Scott,
After my surgery last October, just when they were about to check me out of the hospital, and I finally allowed myself to optimistically look forward to civilian life and edible food, the god(s) of medicine played this card on me:
“You have a nasty infection! Return immediately to Intensive Care. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200, do not go home anytime soon.”
I clearly remember how much that sucked. That was when my mood and outlook went to hell, and I hit bottom emotionally.
Of course, the good news is that the hospital has the resources to fight the infection. And right now, that’s the next step towards a full recover.
Nonetheless, a step backwards, however temporary a setback, sucks. But we’re all looking forward to the gradual reappearance of a healthy and fully function Scott!

Hi Scott and Martha,
Today October 5th and learning things that I really didn’t want to learn.

Ann

Hi Scott,
Your Branch at GSFC is thinking about you and hopes you get well soon.

Just got back from Ireland. I’m sorry to see that you are having a tough time. Keep fighhting it. You’ll get this licked.
When I was in Ireland I looked up the Gallen surnams. Here is the reference.
From The surnames of Ireland by MacLysaght:
Gallen (O Gaillin)
Usually a Ceneil Eoghain sept in Donegal. Alternatively a variant of Gallon.
Gallon (O Gallain) (possibly from Gallan, stone)
A Breffny sept. Map Leitrim.
Get well.

Sending Hugs and Love, Chris and the gang!
