Update from the road. I can not login and update status so I will leave a comment. I am on my sidekick, not my computer. Scott is driving right now and doing ok. We got started at the stroke of 6am, and we should have lunch soon in Blacksburg, VA.
Now I know why they call them the Blue Ridge Moutains, because they look very blue. Weather is great for driving, and traffic is not too bad (I am use to DC/Baltimore traffic).
I need to drive for a while, be back with another update later. Martha

Not even fiction could beat this TRUE STORY of Scott, Martha, Shannon, Erin Hull. If I hadn’t been a small part of living it, I could barely believe it. So glad we could spend Day-Before-Birthday with all of you and see the beginning of THE ADVENTURE PART 3 or 4 or 5!!!! We love you all very much and are eager to hear (read) the details as it unfolds. Prayers beyond counting from many, many friends, family and even strangers and Ann and Dad. MUCH, MUCH LOVE!!!! And thanks for the veggies out of your refrig!

Scott updating: At 2:45 we crossed into Tennessee, and we’re both doing well and swapping off driving as much as I can help. The GPS says that IF we press on, we will actually roll into Memphis about 10PM (excluding dinner). While I don’t think we’ll do that, it will be nice to have a shorter drive and then a rest on Wednesday. We’ll drive until we feel it is unadviseable, then stop (maybe near Nashville). Well, we’re swapping off again, so it’s my turn to drive. Thanks for the many e-mails and comments so far. I will go back and read then when things are getting dreary in the hospital. They really help. Keep smiling.

Hi Scott and Martha,
Sounds like you guys are switching drivers every 5 minutes. Or maybe it’s just that as soon as Martha starts typing messages on her phone, Scott is ready for a break. Or maybe it just takes Martha that long to type it.
Happy (belated) Birthday, Scott!! I wish you many more!!
Do you know the word crisis? Do you know the Japanese word for crisis? It is made up of 2 characters, one meaning danger and the other meaning opportunity. Yes, there is danger, but it could also be an opportunity. For a liver transplant done right this time! (I just read a web site that says that this isn’t really true. But some stranger who knows Chinese/Japanese characters really well, or me (who doesn’t)? Irrelevant of what crisis means in Japanese, this could still be an opportunity.)

Hello & many happy liver thoughts from the Hearth Hill contingent.
Bran & i actually managed to organize ourselves enough to sit outside tonight at twilight & have a healing meditation/ceremony directed at both Scott & Martha.
We went over to the Log House & sat on the lawn near daffodils & tiny lavender flowers at the base of a tree that we chose because it was budding beautifully- when we walked around to the other side of the tree, we saw that it had a huge hole/divot in it’s base, but it was still thriving, growing strong. We took that as a good omen, a metaphor for what we want Scott to be, soon please & thanks!
I hope that our energy & good intentions reached you both, we definitely sent them southwest from us, towards y’all, with only a tiny diversion for Shannon & Erin!
Please, soak up the good juju & be the perfect balance of sick enough for the top of the list & strong enough to heal quickly.
Remember that it’s Spring Equinox, which is a time of balance between dark & light, but that we’re all leaping forward INTO THE LIGHT which, in your case, means into health & healing. All of Dalhraidia is making this leap for you this weekend, carrying you with us in our hearts.
Your Dalhraidian family misses you & wants ALL of you to be at Pennsic this year! Be well & strong knowing that there are so many, many people that love you- both of you, Scott and Martha as well.
Bright Blessings, Sweet Dreams & Swift Healing
~Va/amber
PS i’m all about a liver tattoo in honor of Scott & the donor whose liver will bring him back to us, strong & healthy once more. Keep me in the loop about that, Dwen, please & thanks!

Happy beltated b’day ! How wonderful it is to be writing words in CELEBRATION of another year ! What a wonderful trip for the 2 of you to have had before you start the next steps on the ROAD to Total Recovery. I agree that all seems to be so POSITIVE for SUCCESS in Memphis. Memphis is GREAT ! it is wonderful that Scott is eligible for the surgery . It seems that the TEAM in Memphis is treating him as though he is on the road to complete recovery instead of the not so positive attitude of the Baltimore transplant community. I echo all that Virginia wrote about healing , stepping INTO the LIGHT of LOVE and HEALING…
I see you at the river this summer enjoying its healing energies, celebrating your return to normalcy and looking forward to a LONG and HEALTHY life with Martha and the girls.
For those who read this blog: Please add the donor and that family to your prayers. It shows great courage and love for others to make such a positive decision n a time of such great sorrow.

Congratulations Scott and Martha! I guess all of that fire-jumping helped! With a wonderful start like this, I’m sure the rest of this year will be fabulous. I have had bits of a song running through my head since you went down there -
I’m going to Graceland,
Memphis Tennessee
I’m going to Graceland,
Poorboys and Pilgrims with families
And we are going to Graceland,
There is a girl in New York City,
Who calls herself the human trampoline,
And sometimes when I’m falling flying
Or tumbling in turmoil I say
Whoa so this is what she means,
She means we’re bouncing into Graceland,
Maybe I’ve a reason to believe
We all will be received
In Graceland

I want to punch Hopkins and hug your Memphis surgeon. I don’t know……… I think it’ll make me feel better. On the other hand, I think I love Memphis. Here’s something to put a song in your heart:
#10. “Cities” by Talking Heads
Did I forget to mention, to mention Memphis?
Home of Elvis and the ancient Greeks
Do I smell? I smell home cooking
It’s only the river, it’s only the river.
#8. “Memphis Soul Stew” by King Curtis
Today’s special is Memphis Soul Stew
We sell so much of this, people wonder what we put in it
We gonna tell you right now
Give me about a half a teacup of bass
Now I need a pound of fatback drums
Now give me four tablespoons of boiling Memphis guitars
This goin’ taste alright
Now just a little pinch of organ
Now give me a half a pint of horn
Place on the burner and bring to a boil
That’s it, that’s it, that’s it right there.
Now beat, well.
#5. “Memphis Beat” by Jerry Lee Lewis
I’m going to Memphis where the beat is tough
Memphis, I can’t get enough
It makes you tremble and it makes you weak
It’s in your blood, that Memphis Beat
#1. “Back to Memphis” by Chuck Berry
I’m going to leave here in the morning and walk down to the station
I’ve got just enough money to pay my transportation
I’m going back to Memphis, back home with my Mama
If I have to ride that bus barefooted in pajamas
Back home in Memphis, no moaning and groaning
I know everything will be all right in the morning
#0 Walking in Memphis
Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
W.C. Handy — won’t you look down over me
Yeah I got a first class ticket
But I’m as blue as a boy can be
Then I’m walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel

Both John and I are so glad that things have gone well. I was following the progress through the night and rejoice in the outcome. Believe me, my prayers will continue for a full recovery so that you all can get back to living a normal? life. Lots of Love.

I got to get away, study my geography
I’m just a shadow of the boy I used to be

Memphis - where the hell is memphis?

All those lyrics up there, and they forgot my favorite:
The Mississippi delta was shining
Like a national guitar
I am following the river
Down the highway
Through the cradle of the civil war
I’m going to graceland
Graceland
In Memphis, Tennessee
I’m going to graceland
Poorboys and pilgrims with families
And we are going to Graceland
I am more pleased than I can say to see that picture of Gallen walking ’round. And it may be the camera on the Sidekick, but Sir, you don’t look so much the colour of a banana anymore.
And Martha, I’m so glad that you now have people there to “bum about” with, especially since there are fewer visiting hours for the ICU. I was concerned about you being there by yourself so much; I know *I* would be sort of at a loss. So that makes me happier. Hugs for all of you out there.
Love you both,

Hi Scott,
I am so proud of you. Up and walking. Better then Hopkins. You were still in bed. See those Cowboy doctor’s know their stuff. Not all guitars and music. I told Martha before you left on your trip that Memphis was the best. Stay away from Florida.
Rest when you can and listen to the doctors and nurses. You will be home before you know it.
Martha, food is great in Tenn. I wish I could remember that resturant that is about 3-4 mile from the Hospital. All you can eat $5.99. It was so good and boy can you pig out. I will check on it and let you know. When Scott is discharged maybe if he can and is up to it you two could go there to eat.
Everything is still the same at GSFC. I am working on the donor’s of leave for you. If anyone from GSFC reads this comment because let me Carol know if you are donating any leave to Scott. My number is 301-286-6418. Thanks in advance.

I see Scott continuing to heal and recover and make great STRIDES (hint! hint! )along the path of return to “normal life”. Here is a cute kid moment for you– recently Rob’s folks came for a visit and his mom remarked about the stones we have collected from our property & placed near our woodstove to become a heat absorbing wall when we get a chance to build it–”These are very nice stones.” Luke looked indignant, and exclaimed, “No, Grandma, they’re ROCKS!”

HI! Just a quick comment to let you all know that I am indeed reading each and every comment, and they are wonderful. (it also gives me a place to mark I stopped reading - WOW, so many!) I like Nancy’s reflection of my tag-line back at me; that’s clever. I have read every single comment at least twice over the past week, and have enjoyed each one, though two naturally stand out for me. I was so pleased that Marcus found the time to write, with all that he is dealing with right now; we’re all supporting each other right now, bro, and I think of you guys constantly. The other was probably the shortest comment of the hundreds received since this whole thing started. Erin’s simple message (#125) stopped me in my tracks last night when I read it, and reduced me to tears for a few minutes. I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to work that way…
Look for an update this evening from me, and keep smiling!
Scott said,

Oh, and in terms of song lyrics I think you’ve missed the song that has been stuck in my head for a month. It was also written by Chuck Berry, and starts out:
“Long Distance Information, give me Memphis, Tennessee.
Help me find the party that tried to get in touch with me.
They would not leave a number, but I know the place to call,
Cause my uncle took a message, and he wrote it on the wall.”
A real tear-jerker by the end, but a classic. I remember hearing it as a young kid, about the time my parents got divorced. I only read the full lyrics today, for probably the first time ever. If you don’t know the song, it might be worth looking up.

Scott, you have a way of passing strength to all who are around you, no matter what the circumstances. Good morning to you. Sounds like the sun is shining there in Tenn. Take your walks, get your rest and soon you will be back home. You are healing good and your spirits are high. Keep them there. Long ride in a car to get back home.
I like how you get an apartment like room so that Martha is able to stay with you. That really means a lot to you I know. Then you don’t have to worry about her in a strange town. She will be right there with you. But, maybe Martha needs rest too and she likes her hotel room. She is a true Champ.

now that you have a local Memphis liver instead of a “Ranger” liver, do you feel urges to “sing the Blues”? maybe this explains comment 140. Love to you both. Come home soon.

Thanks once again for all the terrific comments. Occasionally I am overwhelmed by the variety and sheer quantity of people writing in. I hope you all somehow get an opportunity to see first-hand just how many people in the world will/ would support you when you need it. There are a few names here that I don’t recognize, and I’m sure that there are many names which are new to each of you who read this, and it makes me think that in a way we’ve always had an extremely interconnected network of people in place, but that the internet has just accelerated most of those connections.
I am truly impressed that my Mom and John have figured out how to leave a comment. We may get them completely online yet someday. And Mike sure knows how to get my mind off the recovery for a few minutes. Work is my biggest weakness, and I’m glad to hear that the ‘mistress’ is back up (notice that Hubble news took preference over some huge management shifts; got your priorities straight). Bob, you will be missed by many people for many reasons; I hope you take the opportunity for a well-earned break.
And thanks to all of you who have been able to step up to offer assistance in other ways as well. From donated leave at work, to help with the kids/ house/pets in Columbia. While we still miss home a lot, it is so much easier to relax and concentrate on healing when we know that other things are under control. Jody, we can never thank you enough from the first ordeal, and this time is so much more significant. You are a treasured blessing to me always.

My apologies to Arlette, Roak, Jo, and Autumn - for some reason their four comments were declared spam along with the ones about buying looking for “single black hot woman” or “buying viagra”. I have unspamed them so hopefully they won’t be declared spam again.

Serves me right for posting from work! I am so glad to hear all the good news. I hope you will have time for a bit more sightseeing once you get out of the hospital - Memphis has some great history behind it. Although I am sure you are anxious to get home, it is not everyday that you get to see the birthplace of Rock and Roll (unless you live in Memphis)! Steeleye should write a song about it - liver and rock sounds like a good mix for him. The last of our snow and ice is finally melting this week (I am hoping there won’t be an April snowstorm this year), and Autumn has been telling me she wants to go to “camp” - I hope we will be able to see you there. Best wishes from the not-quite-so-frozen North!
Happy healing,
Arlette

Good morning Scott and Martha,
I am really glad to hear the fever is gone and they found the source of the fever.
Sounds like you will soon be out of there.
Maybe then you can go out with Martha and try all the resturants out. She is really finding some yummy ones. Makes me hungry. BBQ so good.
Take care and I will keep praying.

you are going to have to use your time to learn how to COOK Memphis BBQ. Hopefully things remain boring.

“… Sorry this is a boring update - but boring is a GOOD THING!!! Means nothing is going wrong!! …”
YAY!! FOR BORING! Scott, once you get home, maybe I can show you how I can crash a helicopter!
Keep on keepin’ on.

Hey, you guys! Thank you for sharing this website with me. It looks so good. I haven’t read all of it and really don’t have time. But I did manage to read the summary. Very interesting! Now some things I saw today make sense. You’ve come a long way. I wish the very best for your family. My prayers are with you.
