    My Dear Sweet Scott,

How much more can you take. I have been away on Government travel to Galveston, TX. Tried to check the status as much as I could. One day this and the next day that. You are a strong man. You will beat this.
Our prayers continue to flow in for you. You are on everyone’s prayer list in every church around. The Lord is with you and with his help, you thru pull thru.
Doctor wants you to walk and get strong. Grab Martha and take her for a stroll. Tell her you love her and how much you appreciate her being there with you. This keeps your mind thinking while you walk and strength will follow.
Wish I could do something or even give my liver up to you. But, I can continue from this end for leave donors and prayers.
Hang in there man and remember we love you and pray everyday for your health.

    Carol

WELD score? Why would anyone be interested in Scott’s WELD score? They don’t weld the transplant in. And even if they did, Scott wouldn’t be welding, the doctor would. So they should want to know the doctor’s WELD score.
    Transplant welding…that’s just … What?
MELD score? Oh that’s different then. Never mind.

We continue to appreciate all the support and prayers. Please keep them coming!

This afternoon we sat with a friend from the transplant community whose husband was in the process of surgery to remove his stomach (a long-term complication of his liver transplant). It was a strong reminder for me of how much worse things could be. It also reminded me that Martha will soon sit in that same room for many stressful hours for a second time. What good things must I have done in a former life to deserve a wife like her?

Well, it’s time to go stretch my legs with a walk. Hope you all enjoyed your VD.

    Scott,

You know they got shots for that VD thing now? We had a fun one. Went to the Birchmere … to see Burlesque-a-pades .. neo-burlesque. And, surprise surprise, we saw SteelEye.

Try to keep smiling. Hey, you had your sweetheart with you for the day. That’s a real positive.

And Martha, its not the surroundings, or the food, its being in the company of your Love that is the romance.

Scott & Martha, I can’t tell you how awesome it was to visit with you guys last weekend! It boosted my spirits as well; seeing you walk with strength and laughing hard like we always have! Your hearing may be a little off, but your sense of humor is still tops! Greg and I ran to catch the metro and I almost flipped over the entry gate. ugh! Of course it was Greg’s gate, not mine, which is why I now have this bruise on my thigh and sore muscles from laughing so hard. Greg was no help, as usual. haha. Prayer and happy thoughts to both of you!

    Hi Scott, Martha and girls,

I have really enjoyed the pictures Martha. It means so much to see Scott smiling, getting a hair cut, water skiing, lying in bed. Pictures are like progress. The ups and the downs. Okay, how come we never get to see pictures of you Martha and you and Scott together. Someone there in that JH can take a picture of the two of you together. Keep them coming sweetheart they are great.

The ice is melting and the sun is shining and hopefully Scott is coming home. Keep in touch and send pictures.

You are looking good, all things considered. And I hope, at some point, you can appreciate the RESTRAINT shown for not playing with the conversation volume. Hopefully the hearing will start to straighten itself out soon.

Take care friend and bask in all the positive thoughts (and warmer temps) beaming your way.

Good morning Scott from the gang at Goddard. Glad you made it home, got the pic line fixed and the fevers are down. Hearing will improved over time. Being a nurse I have seen this happen before. But, it takes time and I mean a lot of time. So please be patient.

Martha, yes sweetheart it is hard on you trying to be the wife, nurse, mother, worker, maid and everything else. You are one of the blessed ones that can do it. You are a strong women. Of course, my children are grown. They still come to me for help. So do five grandchildren. Trying to take care of my mental case husband and all his health problems, working two jobs, running him back and forward to doctors and hospitals and keeping up with my cake business, cleaning, cooking, and a minute a day for myself. I know just what you are going through. But God made women strong to deal with all the problems and we adjust and do it. Hang in there. The rewards will be worth it.

Keep showing those signs of improvement Scott. We all love you and all the prayers are continuing for you.

This is what I see in the future……….a nice strong healthy liver that someone didn’t need anymore and gave it to Gallen because he needs it. I also see a problem- free installation;as easy as getting a new tire on a car…..is everyone with me??? Recovery time - piece of cake {not a piece of liver!},don’t blink ‘cuz Scott will have to shovel snow in no time. I LOVE LIVER!!!!If you have ever eaten liver in this lifetime - stop it! Think of what the liver does for work -don’t eat it, respect it! Honor the liver and one will show up……if I happen to bump into a liver on the street tomorrow, I’ll hug it and say “thanks!”

    Scott & Martha,

Proving once again that it’s a good idea to marry a woman smarter than yourself, my lovely bride suggests that you put a second TV next to Scott’s where you can adjust the sound for YOU to hear. The “sound TV” can be a small set, like a 13 inch — you don’t even need to look at the screen.

Wouldn’t help with movies, though, but it would allow you to watch programs.

No snow did not stop me from coming to work. Others though are late. Roads were cleared.

How about you? Sounds like you are up and about. Sorry about your hearing. But, most husbands would like that because they wouldn’t have to listen to their wives. ha ha All jokes aside, I do hope it gets better and soon.

Martha, we love the pictures. Keep them coming. It is so easy to read and look at a picture and to relate to it. Yes we would like to see the wedding pictures. Oh yes pictures of Scott as a baby. I bet he was a cute little boy. Probably one of those big tease boys.

Scott’s Dad reverts to CRAZY in his writing notes to Scott, but the great thing is, Scott is patient and loving and smiles beautifully as a true host would!! Thank you, Scott. …and Martha, Shannon and Erin. We liked visiting and catching up, and to see Scott out of the hospital is H U G E !!!! and uplifting!!! The book you passed along I started and am enjoying and want to buy for Craig, the outdoorsman. and maybe others as I read along. THANKS! Bryson’s other books equally interesting - library maybe. Red Robin was fun and that Erin can do homework there speaks to her superior powers of concentration. because of her superior parents…. Blessings and our prayers always and LOVE. Ann Martha, thanks for the help to the aged and un-computerized.

    Martha,
Thanks for that very clear summary. It gets confusing because there have been so many ins , outs, hospita/home and so many procedures that I get confused (something that happens more and more easily these days). Did you know that Aysha flew by herself to Kenya, Leaving in your Valentine Day storm- with a missed connection in Zurich and unscheduled flight to London. She got home yesterday not a bit worried by any of it. She leaves that to us. I know I grew even more gray headed over it just as I’m sure you are getting a few gray hairs over Scott–Well at least YOU have hair.. You are both constntly in my thoughts and daily in my prayers. My eyes are crossed, my toes are crossed and my fingers are crossed that Scott gets a new liver soon. God Bless you all!

Maybe we need new thinking. Instead of everyday being a wait-for-new-liver-day, think of today as a really special day with an excuse to spend time at home with your family. A day paid for with Marcus’ liver. Delibertly spend some fquality time together, delibertly force yourself to spend some time on a hobby, read to the girls, etc. It may help the depression, too. What a busy couple of days! Visits, naps, and work (really!) have had my days very full indeed. We had great visits with both of my parents, and then Thursday with Ceit and Jill (never mind the eternal Walmart run that grew even beyond the ineptness of the Walmartians). The visits were fun, and I found a new cool restaurant where you can write on the tables - bring your own dry-erase markers, though.

Claire, that link looks quite interesting. The “silver bullet” antibiotic that I’m taking is indeed in the family of drugs described, so this information will hopefully be applicable. If so, I should have been taking aspirin all along, but maybe it could help to preserve what’s left of my hearing. As it happens, I have an appointment with my doctor on Friday morning, and I have printed out the article for him. Let’s hope it helps!

With that I’m going to go back to bed and hope that THIS time I can get some sleep (it’s almost 3AM). I hate insomnia, but I do get alot of reading done. Unfortunately, I haven’t tackled my home e-mail account since September - maybe that’s what I should read to get to sleep…

Richard has been doing a massive history project on Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring”. It made me think of Scott this year. Is it time for sign language class for all four of you? Even if only the basics (homework, dinner, emergency, etc.)
Wow, more than two weeks with no hospital stay! (knock on wood) Let’s keep it that way until the new liver becomes available.

That was REALLY nice and thoughtful of the teachers to do that for the girls.

I really miss seeing you four, hope to get together soon (but NOT for another crisis). Anybody what to come to Pittsburgh for fish sandwiches?

    A couple responses:
Claire: We asked the liver doctor about the aspirin treatment, and he wasn’t encouraging it in my case for several reasons: 1) the treatment described in the article began along with the beginning of the antibiotic, 2) he was unwilling to advise a patient based on only one unsupported article, and 3) though the aspirin doseage wasn’t given in the article summary, it would probably conflict with the stomach acid reducers I need to prevent erroding through my esophagus. I was finally able to get the full text (thank you NEJM), and the doseage of aspirin was 3 grams per day - that’s just over 9 regular strength aspirin pills!! Thanks for thinking of me and pointing out this article, but I think I have to agree with the doctor this time. We’re also going to give the full text to the Infectious Diseases doctor, so maybe we can help the next guy she has to give this antibiotic to.

Ms. Monck: The girls love all the gifts from the basket. They were so surprised to receive them. From their point of view, they’re just going along and dealing with it, but I think they are incredibly well-adjusted considering all that is happening (must have come from Martha’s genes). Please thank all the teachers for us (while we arm-wrestle the girls into writing thank-you notes).

Mary: We were directed to several excellent sign language web-sites, and spent some time this weekend learning a few very basic signs. I think I’m going to hold off on formal classes until 1) we confirm that the hearing aids aren’t going to fix the problem, and 2) school is out (the girls are busy enough already).

You are going to have to force the doctors and nurses to write everything down, too (or use their laptops). For your evening phone call, you let it go to the answering machine. Time your machine from dialing to beep; he will have to wait about that time and talk to the machine. Another choice ask an assistant to listen to the phone and when Martha is listen or the machine beeps, hand him the phone for his report.

Another bit of free advice. If you aren’t already, get a tape recorder/digital voice recorder, and get in the habit of turning it on to record whenever a doctor/nurse/specialist walks in. It won’t help Scott too much right now, but it will help Martha from missing something as she tries to listen to the doc and write down everything. It gives you the opportunity to actually listen to the doc now, then write things down later. Or if Scott is alone when the docs come, the session is recorded so Martha can listen later.

Stay strong, and Scott, we’ll see if we can arrange some green Ensure for you for St Patrick’s Day.

Chuck reports that Scott was looking strong and doing well — and he verified this hearing loss thing. If my digital voice recorder would be of any help, you are welcome to borrow it. No tapes needed and it downloads onto the computer. Let me know. Keep up hope for the implants. Chuck’s uncle had that surgery and improved his hearing by 90%. He was basically deaf and now can hear without aids. Amazing.

Glad you’re home again, Scott, IV and all! I hope the tune up did what it was supposed to. You are amazing.

By the way, I think my dissertation defense will be in late April — probably the 25th. I guess I better finish the thing now…
Much love to the whole family.

I got your message about IM, Martha, but I’m afraid I don’t know anything about it. We do use text messaging on our cell phones absolutely all the time. It’s so convenient - especially for situations where you can’t talk. The only downside is that they charge you per message, but we upgraded our plans to include more. I tend to keep my phone on vibrate most of the time. I’ve been in situations where I couldn’t here a phone ring, but I’ve never had my phone buzz and not felt it. :-)

Hey Martha I am sorry to hear about Scott’s hearing but I have used the relay system when I was at work and it really dose work :) All Scott would have to do is dial in to them with his computer and then they would call the person for him and then talk for him and type back to him. It is a great way to talk to people that can’t hear. I would really look into it :) There is a 1-800 number that you call to call him and I think he just calls that same number with his computer I am sure you can look up info on the computer I think it is called MD relay. Hope you guys are ok and maybe if you are home next sat on the 24th maybe will will try to find a sitter and come down or if the girls are going to be home then we will just bring the kids with us :) Let us know and if it works with you guys we will make it happen :) Talk to you soon :) We love you guys and as always you are in our prayers!
    Love,

    Hi Scott and Family,

Life is so much fun. Seems like more problems though then fun. Welcome home again Scott.

Again, I wish I didn’t have to deal with the problems on my own home front (believe me I am not far behind your). Being a nurse requires a lot many learnings. Signs is one of them. It’s not hard but please be patient as you learn. I have a friend who is deaf. She now lives in New York. I communicate with her all the time using MD relay service. So easy and so fast to use. Your talk as you would and the typist on the other end communicates it to the receiver. They type back and the typist speaks it out to you. It is a life saver. Try it you will love it.

Well hope the girls are fine and Martha getting alittle rest. We need some more pictures from home now. Spirits need to be lefted. Let’s see the old boy busy at home doing his work with a big smile on his face. By the way……………has your hair grown any?

Okay that’s all for now got a lot of mailing here to do. I will continue to pray along with many many others. Be good, rest, be patient and most of all share your love that is so deep within you. God bless.

    Hey kids…(all ya’s)

I use IM all the time….especially here at work…it’s awesome and really fast. if you have *any* questions at all…please feel free to call me and ask. here’s my cell: seven oh three four o eight four eight eight four.

I also used tty — i had people call me and i called people using it…it was nice when i worked at a specialist’s office.

also: Morgan of prechain knows sign langugage and may be able to point you in the right direction, should you need it.

also: more helpful projectiles from the peanut gallery….would a laptop or something help? maybe with an external keyboard so you could type on it? I may have an old one lying around the office here that would be crap for much else, but could definitely handle the typing thing…just a thought.

I”m thinking warm, wonderful thoughts for the two of you this spring…and i hope that something beautiful and wonderful and positive is growing in store for you both.

    I found a neat sign language website - http://commtechlab.msu.edu/SITES/ASLWEB/browser.htm
It has quicktime videos of all sorts of words indexed alphabetically.

I remember my Grandpa having a light that flashed when the phone rang. With that and call id, you could get in touch with anyone who phoned through TTY. There are lots of other neat assistive devices available online at places like
    http://www.deafresources.com/shoppages/assistiveindex.shtml
They have flashing lights or vibrating things for fire alarms, doorbells or knocking, telephones, and alarm clocks.

Glad to hear that you are home again!

How the hell are you? You’ve crossed my mind a few times in the past couple weeks so I thought I’d send you a note. I hope you’re getting better and I wish you all the best.

    My Dear Scott and Martha,
I was getting out of the car this past weekend and asked Lance if he had seen you all or the girls around and he said “no”…and I thought, “why?” Then today Rich Williams sent around a synopsis of what’s been going on and reminded me of the website which I was grateful for. I have a friend who used to be an interpreter in sign language and I will ask if she can assist. I will check and get back to you. I know a little bit of sign and would be happy to give some basics and get you started……although I am rusty, will be back in town next week…if you want to chat…melanie.ott@nasa.gov, or melanie.ott@bezant.net.

Alas, no books received from Scott during last evening’s visit by Ann and Steve. But, better, Scott looks great and gets around as if NOTHING WAS going on inside but the normal. And since he was tapped yesterday, he does feel better. And a visit from his Dad always is a pick-me-upper for Dad and Scott!!!!!!! Was great sharing and talking with Martha and Shannon and Erin (and their neighbors and speaking Spanish to some degree). An upside of “this liver thing” is we have more visits and pleasant times together! Praise God for all and for that new liver to come! Love,Ann

I hope your day was a happy as your update sounded. Sure beats sitting around the house. And God blessed you with a beautiful day to get out.
I too am a little concerned about the antibotic stop. But at the same time I hate what it is doing and will continue to do to your organs, not the musical ones. Maybe they will be able to cut it backl a little to stay pace with the infection and slow the damage. You lookmuch better with the little hair you have grown we don’t want to lose any of it. Happy Belated Birthday! I had not realized when it was.

Something you might also want to look into is if you can use the internet to send text messages to the phone. It might help if one of you is out and one of you is at work or something.

If you haven’t found someone to teach you sign language yet, you might consider checking out the local high schools. Northwood is teaching ASL, and others might, too. Let us know if it would be helpful to ask the NHS ASL teacher for reccomendations on private lessons for your family.

Hello. I had a liver transplant at JHU Labor Day weekend, 1995, after battling PSC for 8 years. A few years ago, I was diagnosed with a re-occurrence of PSC, and have been dreading having to go through all this again. Reading your story and hearing how things have been going with you and your family has caused all sorts of emotions to run through me (and no, I am not going to try to write them all down here at one sitting!).

Stay strong and know there are people that you don’t even know who are checking up on this page and are sending prayers your way.

Hey Scott, it’s your fellow NASA engineer again. My last week or so has not been all that rosy, as the abdominal pain that they were hoping was from Fosamax sure doesn’t seem to be cooperating. Pretty sure it is just good ole PSC pain. Had hoped I’d go a few more years before getting to this point again.

Anyway, it is great to read that things are somewhat stable for you and your family right now. Guess, as I read what your wife write in the updates, silence is good when you know that when “the call” comes, it is going to be incredibly hectic.

I was very excited to read that you are going to be at the Apr. 24 event at JH.!! I am going to *try* really really hard to make it. Both my wife and I would love to meet you and your family, as we have tossed the idea of a living donor around (for my impending need of a second xplant) for a while before your website was brought to my attention. Unfortunately, I can’t guarantee my presence due to circumstances out of my control (I think you can relate to that one!)

So anyway, sitting here at my satellite engineering desk, I wanted to drop in and say hi to my comrade (in multiple ways)… even though we have never met. Believe me that my thoughts and prayers are with you. Rom 8:28 (that verse may be overused at times, but I believe that in situations like ours, it takes on a meaning of its own).

Feel free to email me sometime if you need to vent or whatever. I can empathize a lot with your struggles. (I had to put in my email address to insert this comment, though I do not know if you see the addresses as the admin of the website. Let me know!)

Shannon, HAPPY 14th! two years until driving Daddy’s car! Now is time to drive Daddy crazy with cell phones, makeup and BOYS (even it they don’t interest you, it’s entertaining to fluster Daddies). Work hard and do your chores. I will see you and Erin next week. Aunt Mary

    SCOTT!

It is good that you had such a GREAT weekend! a nice way to CELEBRATE so many things!

SCOTT: you are a WALKING, MIRACLE and not that other very negative thougt! You are ALIVE, the infection seems to be behaving and disappearing? ,the open wound is healed, the PICC line is OUT, you are working, you are able to work on projects with your daughters, you are able to leave the house and stay for a while at a place I know that you love.. SEEMS to me that HEALING and RECOVERY are occurring… think on the positives so that they blossom and block out any negatives that might think of returning…

    be grateful..

And I second what nancyB was saying … POSITIVES! That’s what we’re all still thinking and sending your way.

Happy Father’s Day to you and to Marcus! (and all you other Dad’s out there)

Hi, Jenny, hope you enjoyed your hike.

Did any one else notice the smell of really-old-gym-uniform-in-locker? or is that Martha’s updates getting a little old?

Does anyone else notice that that the date/time stamp on the updates are off by 9hours? it is really only 4:52pm on the July 9

  116. scotthull said,

    July 12, 2007 at 8:30 pm

Mary, teh time stamps have always been off by several hours. I thought it was stamped in GMT, but that should only be off by 4 hours (5 in the winter). Nine hours is odd, but then what about me ISN’T odd?

And look for an update very soon. We had little to say, so we didn’t say it. Maybe if things continue to go well it will be time to close up this shop at the one year mark. Any comments?

I do find it a bit of a relief to check and see nothing new - it means things aren’t getting any worse!

Is there any chance you will be making it to Pennsic? or is that not possible this year?

    Hi Scott,

Sorry that I haven’t been here in a while and I have missed a lot. At the risk of sounding like a religious fanatic, I’ll write this anyway.

I once told you that I was a Nichiren Buddhist who chants Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and you said that you were more into the Celtic stuff.

The most important thing in religion is does it answer your prayers. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo means Devotion to the Mystic Law of Cause and Effect and it’s Teachings or Sound. But it means more than that. Go to http://www.sgi-usa.org for more info.

What’s important is getting actual proof - that things that you chant/pray about actually occur. I would strongly encourage you to try to say Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

    Nam as in Viet Nam
    Myoho as in me-yoh-ho
    Renge as in wren-gay
    Kyo as in key-oh

Our bodies, which get sick, can also cure itself. It’s about manifesting one’s Buddha-nature (which we all possess). This gets us in rhythm with everything else.

Try to chant as much as possible about becoming healthy again so that you can show others how great chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo really is!

To reiterate what was writen by Arlette et al, it is wonderful to see the current notes to be about everyday life and family. It is a relief to see that your condition seems to be stable enough to be planning for Pennsic. Hope to see you both at the war this year.

    Scott and Martha;

As you know, Alec has a similar disease, but in a childhood form, with Legg Perthes. He had the surgery where holes were drilled into the bone to allow air and blood to circulate and try to help the bone grown. They drilled two holes into his hip, during his surgery to place an exfixator into the bones (which helped to lengthen the bone and also helped to get the bones to grow). The holes really did help the bone grow, and four months after the surgery, the xrays clearly showed new growth. 3 years later, we are down to yearly appointments, instead of monthly, and his bones appear to be on an appropriate path. Like Scott, he may have arthritis in his hips when he is older, and he may need hip replacements, but the other thing his doctors told him was to religiously do daily exercises, and that that would help keep blood flowing and hopefully prevent the need for hip replacements. Scott’s case is obviously different, but potentially, such exercises (stretching, mostly) will help. We used the Rubin Institute at Sinai hospital in Baltimore, with Dr. Paley and Dr. Standard. Paley is the world expert in Alec’s rare disease, and the Rubin Institute is the foremost hospital for such bone issues, with people coming from around the world (and believe me, we see and hear them in the waiting room!!!). Paley is also associated with Hopkins, so if you need someone truly good, I would recommend these doctors. You have our best wishes and you know you can contact us with questions!

Hey there bud! Glad to hear Pennsic was such a good time. It sounds like there was more healing of the soul than anything else. A great place to recharge those batteries! I was sorry to read of the nagging pains that seem to continue to return. Hopefully the PT will offer some sort of relief. Pass along hugs & kisses to Martha & the girls and continue to hang in there. One day at a time….

    Hi all,
It was great to see and chat with you at Pennsic - Shannon looks so grown-up now! We are all amazed at your fabulous lip-reading abilities (leave it to Gallen to learn something faster than anyone would expect). Kaylah almost didn’t believe that you couldn’t hear her! We were very lucky that Thorgrim was able to make it down on the last Friday, and was looking pretty good. My fingers are crossed for a longer trip to Pennsic for both of you next year. I really hope that the next round of surgeries goes well, and that the physio can get the blood flowing without causing you too much extra pain. I am tremendously impressed by your ability to stay positive when everything hurts - I know it can really start to drag on you after a while. It was wonderful to see you.
    Love,

We really miss you all and are surprised to be at the halfway point in August. Please know we are thinking about you and pulling for you. We will be in touch about a visit.

Scott, Glad you were able to make it to Pensic. And that it was as therapeutic as it sounds, mentally, emotionally, and (okay maybe not so much) physically. Did Shannon sneak a dive in the lake to look for leeches? Its gotta be great visibility in there - you figure 6 - 9 inches?
Stay positive (you seem to have a knack for that, even thru the pain and frustration), and get out and enjoy this nice break in the weather we’re having.

Does Richard’s 10 seconds count on a single ski count? Richard is still pretty sore from tubing and skiing. He also twisted his knee badly. Thank goodness he is not playing soccer this year. He started 10th grade today. Hopefully, Shannon will be able to work on her homework more indepentently this year.
